CPHSS staff presents at Public Health Law Research Annual Meeting
1/24/2013

Colleen Barbero presented on January 17, 2013 at the Public Health Law Research Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. At this meeting, top public health law researchers and experts discussed ways to use law to improve public health and shared the latest additions to the growing evidence base. As part of the CPHSS Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Policy Analysis project, an inter-agency team of public health researchers and policy analysts are developing a system to rate the strength and comprehensiveness of current state chronic disease prevention and health promotion laws.  Barbero and colleagues’ presentation, entitled “An approach to assess evidence quality and public health impact of chronic disease prevention and health promotion laws,” described the development of tools to assess the evidence for policy strategies reflected in state laws. Barbero also presented the results of applying the tools to the evidence for policies related to public access defibrillation and community health workers. Participants also discussed next steps for disseminating the tools and results to the public health policymaking community.  A manuscript on how to use the policy evidence assessment tools is now being developed.
